Hi,
We just picked up our 26.5 hunter. We love this boat, my only concern is
she goes over to the side very easy. Feels like it going over every time the wind picks up. Is this the way this boat runs, Or is it just me, and I need to
just learn how to handle a bigger boat.

It's you and It's not really a bigger boat. It took me 2yrs to get over the "feeling" and I bought the boat! Now I do things that don't even cause me to blink when before I "felt" like I was going to die. Couple of suggestions,, get out there a much as you can and KNOW your wind and weather conditions until you know how to handle them. Learn how to reef your sails sooner rather then later (too late)

check this! note the reefed main? good luck!

Hi Denise,
Good advice, I love sailing, My 19ft Compac was great to sail. Just need time on this one. And it is a bigger boat for me, 19ft to 26.5ft, is great. I really want to get to a 32/34, some day.

Thanks for you reply.

Curious, what are you seeing on the inclinometer when "anxiety" sets in? And then what do you do about it? Do you know how and when to reef? And how to depower? With a Compac 19 it would seem that you would. I am not familiar with the H26.5 but Denise is right about reefing. If predicted winds are to be 15 then you should probably start with a reefed main. Looks like you have a furling jib that you can reduce in size also.

Hi Ed,
Inclinometer read about 30/35, then I turn into the wind. And everything is OK. I do have a furling jib. And that does help. I never reef the main on this boat. I will try that this weekend. May be a good way to start out. I am on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH, and the winds can change in a heart beat.

Thanks for the info

Yep, 30 to 35 is scary. Slow and not fun if you are not used to it. Are you sheeted in too tight? Once you have the main flat(depowered) then try letting it out if you haven't already.

Reef Early, reef often.

Try putting a reef in the main before you head out if the wind is approaching 10 kts. See how that works for you. All of these boats are different and the condition of the sails can often make a difference too.

Controlling Healing

I felt the same way when I first went to my Pearson 30, which is a fairly narrow-beamed boat, that heals quickly at first, but then sets on a stable angle of heal, and takes off. However, before getting into reefing if only day sailing, try some of this first to control the boat.

If the boat is healing too much let down the main traveler; if you need more, ease the main sheet until the boat flattens out some. Other remedies if going up wind are to tension the back stay to flatten the mainsail at its head which will de-power the sail at the top and reduce healing. If you're still over too far much of the time, roll in some jib if you have roller reefing; otherwise put up a smaller or flatter jib. If you've exhausted all of that and you still feel overpowered, then reef the main.

There are several people on here who have rigged up an easy system to reef the main. Perhaps it would help to check those out, it may provide you with some insight.

Yes! The 26.5 LOVES to run heeled over and is pretty stable doing it. If you want to let it sail a little flatter, then let the main luft a little. I usually sail in winds of upto 20mph before I reef. I taught my wife to skipper, and she loves putting the rails in the water. Reference the pics in the 26.5 gallery.
