I recently acquired a First 38, and the running backstay gear seems to be absent. Could someone describe the gear that was original on the boat? All I've got is the wire stowed on the shrouds and the deck fittings. I presume it was a rope system, like the mainsheet on a small boat? A picture would be great!

I expect to take the boat places where I may want them deployed.

I have a First 375 I think is similar to the First 38. The running backstays are wire most of their length with a 4:1 rope tackle system at the bottom.

Congratulations on a fabulous boat. As you are I'm sure aware several have circumnavigated. The runners are indeed rope-based affairs, with I think 4:1 blocks. I know many people that do not blue water sail take them off their masthead rigged Firsts. You can see them (a bit blurry) in the document describing the most well known First 38, Bagheera.

The previous models area seems to have disappeared recently. I had a url in my browser history that is no longer valid.

Taken from my First 405 1986, closest cousin of the First 38, based on the same hull in the 80's (90's First 38 is quite different)
