I HAVE VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL MOVEMENT AT MY EMERGENCY TILLER HEAD, NOT THAT MUCH BUT AM CONCERNED. IS THERE A BUSHING AT THAT POINT THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED OR IS IT MORE SERIOUS. MY PARTS MANUAL JUST SHOWS A PLASTIC WASHER AND NOT REALY ANY THING THAT WILL TAKE OUT THE LATERAL SLOP. ANY THOUGHTS?

Rudder Post Movement - Steering maint.

I have a Catalina 30 - 1985. I am not sure if your problem is the same as the one I had, but this may help. I was sailing one day in high winds and suddenly lost steering control with the wheel (Edson steering Pedistal). I had to use the emergency rudder contol pipe in the rudder post to get home! As soon as I opened the rear lazarette and unscrewed the cover off the steering cables, the problem was obvious. The steering cables had enough slack in them that one cable had slipped out of the groove/track of the cast metal plate that attaches to the top of the rudder post. In order to tighten the steering cables, I had to crawl into the rear quarter berth, remove the 3 foot long molded fiberglass panel that covers the steering cables. Then use two small adjustable wrenches to tighten that cables. You will see each cable is attached to a hook-eye with two nuts. It will be clear when you see it. Now my steering is much tighter, much more positive control of the boat. I am sure I used to lose a lot of speed due to my rudder flopping around and causing me to have to constantly correct course. Good luck. See Also Edson web site below.

Rudder Slop

I have aC30 1988 My rudder moves up and down about 3/8 of an inch and has a little movement from left to right.Ifeel the up and down move ment when my rudder hits bottom ,I have a3, 10" daft. Side to side and frount to back move ment is a diffrent story .West Systems has a fix for that in there fiber glass repear menual. The hard part is geting the rudder off the dam boat I worked at the bolts for a day then cut them off with ahack saw blade .Once you remove the rudder and clean the shaft hole, you drill three holes along the shaft and pump in WestSystems epoxy .They make a epoxy mix for this I think Catlina service has a work sheet on this repear The boat has a problem with its stearing box drain it is to small and clogs from small stuff being washed between the hatch cracks .Then the water drains out from around the rudder shaft with dirt that acts like sand paper and makes the hole larger. Its not a bad repear John O
