Rudders

To help improve the steering when under sail, we have been told that the steering may be improved with modified rudders. Last year, we modified our motor and rudders so we can pull up the rudders and just use the motor when we need to, but we tend to like using both when coming into marinas. We have some choices. Idasailor makes a modified rudder specifically for the MacGregor 19 that is similar in shape, and likely weight, of the orginal and extends the rudder 2 inches in to the water. We were wondering if anyone has used these rudders on the 19ft, and what was the performance improvement?? Is there anything about weight of a rudder that would be important (I think not but am no expert, but the rudders of the "19" are much smaller but significantly heavier than those of the "26")? The other choice we have is to consider using the MacGregor 26-M (not X) rudders. We have the same brackets as the MacGregor 26-M. These rudders are narrow and long, and as with the "26", we could not motor with these rudders down (only at low speed) due to the risk of boats tipping when motoring with these rudders down. Are people using anything other than fiberglass or ployethylene for their rudders? We are thankful for any and all responses
