Hi All thanks for the help with my last question about Play in the Rudder/Tiller Last weekend I finally got the chance to remove the rudder and take it home to do the repair to remove the slack. After tearing it down I found that the housing that the rudder and tiller mount in was cracked at the welds is this a common occurrence or Am I just lucky? Bruce

I don't know if that is normal or not but I am going to pull mine off and check it out now. Thanks for the info. Rob Morton S/V Euphoria

Mine too

Mine is ed as well. I am going to tear apart the whole thing and have it welded, replace the down haul and sand and paint everything. Brian

elastic downhaul

This may sound goofy but you can try 3/8" elastic line on the rudder downhaul. Last time I took mine apart because it needed maintenance and the camcleat that secures the downhaul was destroyed the last time we hit bottom. The elastic line will keep the rudder down, but it will also allow some movement if you were to touch bottom.

Weld failure

Not uncommon, I'd guess, as the welds failed on my H23 rudder housing last summer. I took it in to a local welding shop and they TIG welded all seams for less than $50. A can of black spray paint and I'm better than new...

<how often do zou sail

Bruce, how often do you sail your 23. I just bought mine and sail out of Ventura Harbor. Perhaps we could meet at Mandaly Beach and check out boats out. Right now I am in Germany and was at a large lake where motor boats were not allowed. All sail boats and mostlz day sailers. Very pretty place with good steady winds of about 10knts. Brian

Success

Thank you All for your help !! I finally got out today with a Rudder that had NO Play and was very responsive. I had the Housing Welds redone and I added rubber shims between the housing and the rudder to take the play out of it. The shims also helped to keep the rudder down and straight. Brian, I would like very much to meet with you one day I sail out of Channel Islands(We keep it in the Dry dock) Again Thanks to all for your Help and experience.
