Is the kick-up rudder on a 1988 Catalina 222 wood core? Just wondering if I should take it apart and inspect.

I have an 88' and my kick-up rudder is wood cored. Mine has small splits at both the bottom front corner and the bottom rear corner. It's pretty soaked inside, has a small 5" diameter delam spot near the bottom and it's heavy as hell. I ended up buying a replacement blade from CD this year. It's the newer foam-cored blade. Should be lighter than the original, I hope. It should arrive any day now. The previous owner of my boat always left the rudder down at the dock. I don't know how many years the watertightness of the rudder had been compromised. I noticed it when I bought the boat, but the rest of the boat was in such good condition, I overlooked it. I plan on raising my new rudder when not in use. That should keep it in pretty good shape and I won't have to barrier coat and paint it either. Dave

Rudder Blade

Dave, I need a blade for my kick-up rudder. Would you sell your old blade? Please contact me at david.williams@abilenetx.com Thanks, David

Be careful!

My 1986 blade also get very wet inside. One day during strong winds the rudder snapped off at the water line. It was quite an event. I wouldn't recommend putting a soaked rudder on your boat even if it were free. I replaced mine with one from CD. I noticed that the chandlery section of this web site also sells rudders. Here is a description: Catalina 22 Kick-up Rudder Assembly This kick-up rudder assembly is made of high density polyethelyene (hdpe) for maximum strength. It won't absorb water, split or swell with age. The price is $499. They sell the non-kick-up for $269 which is way less than what I paid CD for mine. These rudders are not certified for class races, though. Randy
