I am trying to make sense of this 1987 H23 i bought recently from an older gentleman who kept in a yard for a couple of years.

It seems to me that at some point the rudder was replaced with some other similar, but not identical rudder. I cannot be sure but I am posting some pics, so other owner might be able to advice.

The pintles of this boat were bent, so I suspect that the original rudder was damaged beyond repair by some sort of impact.

The rudder box is also ground down on one side and the hole was moved.

I'd love to hear some opinion.

hello

looking at your pictures, it looks like you have a kick up rudder system.... I had one similar on my Mac25... boat long decommissioned and gone now... but I still have the rudder system here for it....

the metal transom mount system being separate from the rudder down in the water, allowes it to come up when you hit something underwater with your rudder... this prevents your rudder from breaking or suffering damage.... after it kicks up and you have passed the danger, it can be lowered again....

here are some pics for you....

sincerely
Jess

Hard to tell from your photos, but that looks about like my H23 rudder, except that it appears to be mounted further aft in the metal bracket. Mine has the forward edge of the fiberglass/foam blade more or less in line with the forward edge of the bracket and the aft edge in line with the aft edge of the bracket when down. I don't know why you have two sets of holes in the bracket, but if you can mount the bolt that the rudder swings on in the forward hole it may work.

Yes, the rudder fits the other hole, and it swings OK and it is flush with the box. It is strange that there would br two set of holes if the rudder were stock ...

same as my H23, 1987. I have two sets of holes in my rudder housing. I would guess that the original was worn out larger overtime or there may have been a reason to move it, maybe performance. I'll add pics to my profile so you can look. Just had the housing powder coated, came out great.

Looking at the photos sir, that is the orginal rudder and housing. Housing can be reused. If I hear you correctly the pintels are damaged as if the rudder was struck hard with the rudder tied down so hard that the kick up mech. was not in use properly or the boat could have laid down in the sand or mud doing that but doubt that.

The hole in the rudder is probably damaged and if it cannot be fixed a new rudder is in order which you can buy from the forum store which by the way you do get a good price. I know the rudder was made by Foss Foam.

As for placement of the rudder in the aft hole, contrary to what someone might say, it would be more difficult to control the boat with the rudder further aft in the rudder housing. I hope this helps you.
