There was a recent thread on this very topic in the "Smaller Boats" area.
A common solution was to cleat the line that pulls the rudder down on a break-away cleat. An example here.
This solution keeps the rudder down but gives you protection against striking something.
Since you are new to this boat, maybe I should ask if you are aware that the line on the rudder can be used to pull it up or down. There is also an assembly on the pivot that allows you to tighten down on the rudder to hold it in place. The spacers on it can wear out and allow the rudder to slip.
