Presently have a 1971 Balboa 20. Looking for a kick-up rudder or some way to modify the
current one piece rudder. Every time I moor the boat I have to pull the rudder because our lake is so shallow. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Ya, you can cut the existing rudder in two and add a rudder head made of aluminum plate. A real simple method is to do what MacGregor did years ago with their 22' Venture. If you can find one, then you can see the shape of the cut they made, where to drill the axis hole for the pin, etc. I can't draw a picture in this box, but if you look at some other brands of boats that have a kick up rudder you can get some shape ideas and how to make it work.

Neala,

Two additional options come to mind.

1. There is a nice drawing of a Ensenada 20 (which has the same hull as a Balboa 20) kickup rudder on http://www3.sympatico.ca/rodney.brandon/serendipity.htm

2. The other is a state of the art, replacement rudder from IdaSailor in Idaho. Pricey but definately state of the art! I am going to replace my rudder with one of these in the near future. http://www.idasailor.com/catalog/pr...d=638&osCsid=667eed0267743afbc30ad5368aa748a9

IdaSailor also has a couple of the other common parts broken on the B20's like the mast foot.

Hope this helps.
