Nylon washers

Mike, if your '89 is the same as my '87 H23, then you're looking for a nylon washer about 4" or so O.D. I'd be surprised if Hunter Marine didn't have it for you. Otherwise, you could just get a piece of 1/16" teflon sheet (No, I don't know where... sorry!) and cut a few circles out of it yourself. I think the stock washers are about 3/32" or 1/8" thick. It's funny; I almost ended up in the same position as you last month. I disassembled the rudder to clean & paint. Dropped one of the washers in a pile of leaves, and had a heck of a time finding it again! Jim Maroldo s/v: 'Lil Wass Ett Ocean Gate, NJ

Mike, Many of the industrial bolt and fastener

companies that supply industry stock these type of washers. We used some very simular to what you discribed. These companies only stock nuts, bolts, washers and other types of fasteners. Any large city (pop 300K) should have such a store. Good Luck, Ray

Washers

Mike: I never even knew they were supposed to be on there. My boat never had them. What purpose do they serve? Maybe if you find them you could pick up a couple for me, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Dan Ulrich

Nylon washers

Try the link below. If they don't have the size you need, they have the nylon or teflon sheet (or any other "___lon" sheet you can think of) so you can make your own.

Forgot Dan I think they let you put sufficient tension on the rudder to keep it in the water and yet not gouge it when it does pop up , other wise you have metal scraping into a pretty expensive piece of plastic, take care see you at the club, MIke

What they do...

Mike, you're correct! The washers are used as self-lubricating spacers between the rudder and the metal housing. They help eliminate slop, and as you said, they keep the rudder from getting chewed up. I don't think the coffee can lids would last too long. They're not nearly as tough as teflon.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Big thanks for the note on this one. Took apart rudder assy today and noted the washers were not present. 4" OD will work? I'll try local Dayton area supplier. Should be on the lake by May 19th if the rain stops long enough to finish prepping the deck. So far she appears to be one heck of a boat!
