I have had the problem of the prop of my extra long shaft honda 9.9 chewing on the aft edge of the rudder and am looking for a solution. I know I could mount a motor mount to the transom, where the motor is,but I would like to know if anyone has found a better/more practical step other than putting out the $ and drilling holes in the boat. I do not choose to have a different motor as this motor meets our needs very well. This rudder was a free replacement from catalina as they replaced the original one-this was a free replacement and is the kick-up type. The kick-up rudder is what is needed for this trailable boat.

Rudder Vs. Prop

I put a PowerThruster on my motor to prevent my rudder, when it is kicked up, from getting chewed up by the prop. Works great and improved my gas mileage. Only have to drill four small holes in your motor.

Devise a stop

I devised a motor stop on my C25 when I had it many years ago.

L Shaped Guard

I had a local machine shop make me an L shaped guard out of heavy duty SS. I bolted it to the cavitation plate on the motor.

Hey Charles, a couple of thoughts. I'm guessing here that the motor turning is left unlocked with some degree of tension so that it doesn't flop around. Moving the motor to starboard by changing out the high density plastic piece on the transom may help. You might consider a soft link, which when rigged holds the motor straight aft when not hooked up and when hooked up the motor follows the rudder. See the link for the softlink.

Is it because the motor and rudder do not turn together? I am having trouble visualizing how you could hit the prop any other way. If so, an ez-steer is a great solution, you can buy the pre-fabricated one or make one yourself. The motor and rudder turn together, greatly improves your maneuverability and you won't be able to hit your rudder with the prop.
