rudder tube corrosion

It was recommended by a surveyer, that I repair the rudder tube
on my 72 Vega. There is a lot of corrosion at the bas of the tube.
Does anyone have experience with this? I was thinking of
fiberglassing around it, or applying epoxy putty over it. Any
ideas?

My guess is that you are experiencing galvanic corrosion. I suggest that
you check your thru-hull valves and other brass / bronze underwater fittings
as well. Also, take a good, hard look at your prop.

These concerns are more important if your boat is = or has been kept at a
dock, especially if you have shore power brought aboard.

I'm sure others will have some words on this.

Good Luck..............Ed

Ed is so right! If your boat is in a slip check all the boats in your
area who
are charging their batteries- and try to find the ones who use a cheep car
battery charger. These chargers release AC current and kill everything
around!
