rudder tube and stuffing box

Are the rudder tubes on an 81 Citation 30 glassed in real good? The reason I am asking I wonder if my rudder tube is not tight and maybe slightly working with h turns of the rudder shaft. I have for about three years now a slight drip or seep coming from the rudder when I sail or motor. I was sure it was just the stuffing in need of tightening. Yesterday I climbed down below and tightened the stuffing nut a quarter turn and the turned the wheel to see if it felt too tight. Felt fine but i did notice that the whole black rubber stuffing box hose moved a little bit too. Only about 5 degrees or so. I tightened the hose clamps, they were not really loose, this made no difference. The rubber hose still turned sightly and i noticed there was moisture seeping in just under the rubber boot. So-has anyone ever heard of a rudder tube loose? The tube seemed to be bedded with a 5200 type compound and appeared to be original. The water seemed to be seeping out of this bedding compound. Has anyone out there worked on irwin rudder tubes or built these boats. Seems to me the tube should be glassed in tight. Dont understand what the compound is there for. Thanks

The tube on mine

is all glassed to the hull. Me thinks someone made a modification. Irwin 28's also have an all glass tube. Inside the tube are delrin bearings the rudder shaft rides on. What year is your Irwin? Have you contacted Gene Garmon? He owns Garmon Yacht sales and worked for Ted Irwin. Fair Winds Cap'n Dave
