What can be used as a packing material under 3-bolt flange of stuffing box to seal the rudder trust shaft bearing in order to prevent leaks? Is the detail drawing of the upper part of the rudder shaft connection available? Many thanks, Michael

Rudder shaft seal.

On my H37C Cherubini I use the same packing as on the engine shaft. If you slide the top half up after loosening the bolts(fun!) you should find a groove with some packing in there. The groove is a chamfer on the bottom piece against the rudder post. Not sure what illustration you are needing. I have some H37C rudder pictures at home on the desktop PC.

Stuffing stuff

Thank you for your clear answer, Ed. It is so clear that I'm no longer need the drawing or photo. It will be fun to stuff the box when the boat is on water (under static pressure of an inch of WC).

Rudder seal below WL?

While docked in the Erie Canal at Waterford, NY, I decided it was time to repack. First job was to unload the lockers. Then I actually got in the lockers to get a wrench on those bolts. But there was no water ingress even though the boat was heavily loaded. So I am surprised that your seal is below the waterline. Turns out that my very small leak was not the problem. And I remembered after the previous post that I placed the problem in the Photo Forum. See the Link.
