What is the best way to transport the rudder on a Catalina 22 when trailering? I have a mast support that is connected where the rudder is and am looking for the best way to carry/transport the rudder? Joseph Washburn "Disciple Ship"

If you are hauling your boat with a truck or sport utility vehicle transport the rudder in the back of your vehicle. When I rig the mast I put the mast support in my truck and the rudder on the boat. Your other choice might be to wrap the rudder in a blanket and transport on the cockpit or cabin floor.

I Agree with Gary

Joe: I agree with Gary. We carry our rudder in the back of our Suburban wrapped in padding, then cover it with boxes that are filled with other boat stuff. I did want to mention that I carry very little on the boat when I trailer it, only sails and life jackets, and sometimes the boom. (The cushions, galley, and porta pottie are, of course, in the boat, but almost nothing else). There are 2 reasons for this. The first is to keep the weight on the trailer and boat to a minimum. The trailer tires don't need any extra stress, and neither does the hull. The second reason is that one time I did have a fuel tank in the boat and trailered it from Key Marathon to Ft. Lauderdale. When I got there, I found that it had worn a nice hole into the liner of the fuel tank compartment. Ever since then, I carried as little as possible on the boat. These are just my thought on your question. Aldo

rudder

I keep my rudder/tiller in the cockpit. This way I don't forget it at the pier... pretty stupid feeling if you forget your rudder...

cockpit will work

I found that setting it in the cockpit and wrapped with a nice comforter will do the trick. Just make sure that there is not a lot of play for it to slide around when traveling.
