I am new to mooring and am in an area with some tidal current. My P303 has a 2GMF Yanmar. When left unattended... should the transmission be in (Forward, Neutral or Reverse)? Should the helm be locked forward... or left free-wheeling?

Here's what I do

Stimpy, I'm on a mooring and at times we can get pretty heavy waves and/or winds. I put the transmission in reverse (my father in law, an old salt, told me that's what he always did... why mess with success, eh?) I also lock my wheel so it's dead-straight. When I once left my wheel loose, I returned to the boat and found a horrible racket as the rudder went port/starboard/port/starboard with the waves. Yuck! Fair Winds, Dave
