Rudder Support Crack

The bottom of the support for the rudder has cracked allowing the bushing to move. I'm wondering if this support is really needed as most more modern boats do not have it. Any ideas?

Rudder may also need repair

From the picture it looks like the rudder must have dropped some also as it does not look like the broken bottom of the skeg can go back into proper position without pushing the rudder up. I think you need this really looked at by a yacht repair person before any further use.

I agree...

...with Landsend. If it came with it, you need it. Rudders on newer boats are engineered so they do not need a lower support. Doing without it if it was designed to be there is asking for trouble. Tom s/v Orion's Child

What material

So does anyone know what this material is that makes up the skeg and rudder? It sounds like some kind of honeycomb fiberglass.

I had the same problem

My previous boat was a 1980 H30 with the skeg hung rudder. When I purchased the boat, the skeg had been repaired because of a problem similar to yours. The repair consisted of a plate of stainless steel that was bent/formed around the bottom of the skeg and through bolted in place. Not the prettiest thing I ever saw but it was strong and lasted beyond the ten years that I owned the boat. I don't know the details of how it supported the lower rudder shaft. The skeg on my boat was a little different in that it did not extend below the depth of the rudder itself.
