I have my 1979 Hunter 30 out of the water having the bottom done and a few other repairs. There was a slight bit of play in the rudder skeg and I ask the boatyard to tighten the bolts. When they went to tighten the bolts they found the bolts were rusted to the point they could not secured. Has any one replaced these bolts before, and do you have any advice on the process? Thanks.

Skeg Bolts

HI Steve The skeg is attached with 5 SS lag bolts, the forward one being shorter than the rest. If the bolts will not tighten, I suggest removing the skeg and repairing the attachment, which, believe it or not, is a small piece of wood 2 x 4 glassed in to the skeg. As an alternative, you could fill the five holes with an epoxy mush and then redrill the holes, but I think that method would eventually fail. You might find my review of the 30 interesting as I redesigned the rudder, and completely thrilled with the increased performance. Good luck Steve Fredrick
