I have a 2000 Hunter 340 that I have sailed for two seasons. When it has been hauled out in the fall I have noticed where it looks like the rudder scraped the hull on both the port and starboard sides about half way through rudder swing. It does not rub when the boat is in the cradle. Someone told me that do to the construction of the rudder it will float up against the hull. My Question is : Has anyone else had this problem and what can be done about it. I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks Pat

just an idea

i dont have this problem as i am a 23.5 owner. but if i were to address this problem i would think you would have to drop the rudder shaft out of the boat and install a teflon washer between the rudder and the hull (slip it over the rudder shaft) or maybe an easier way would be to split the teflon washer and snap it around the rudder shaft (you wouldnt have to remove the rudder) i think i would try the latter measure the gap between the rudder and the hull you could use a few washers if need be

Rudder scrape...

On my '98 340 there is about 1/2 inch of rudder play up/down. When I press on the emergency tiller attachment the rudder stock pops down and then pops up when I step off. On my boat at least it hasn't scraped the hull but I suppose if things were off a bit it might. Do you notice the rudder binding up while sailing? Since the rudder should be bouyant I would think that it would be all the way up when the boat is in the water. It sounds like you're on the hard now, can you push up on the rudder at all? It's probably at it's lowest possible point right now but might float up higher in the water. Good luck!

Sure Cure

I hear the 376's don't have this problem. Consider an upgrade :)>
