The bolt in the lower portion of the rudder post is cchafing the up haul roape. So much so that it broke, with a little help fro hitting the bottom. Has any one come up with a solution for this? Also the pulley system is rather ineffecient, so has some ome come up with a2t:1 or 3:1 system? I have some thoughts. Thanks, Corky

A design flaw
Corky- I've been hearing about this problem since I've been searching for a boat. It's talked about in "owner's reviews." One owner says he's given up on the mechanism and uses a boat hook to raise the rudder. It will be interesting to see if you get a response that will be usable. Otherwise, would like to hear your ideas. scott

Scott, Getting the rudder up is no problem as mine just floats up when I release the rope that runs through the rudder post. I have since split the continous rope into two as it makes it easier. To get rudder into the down position has been the problem. They disign it with a single pulley in the tube. I foung it more of a problem than it was worth. I just step on the rudder and push it down with my foot and secure the rope to the cleat. It means you have to kinda' hang off the back of the boat but not bad with the 260 and the swim platform. When I get the boat home I am goint to try and create a 2 or 3:1 pulley system. The rope from the lower pulley that is at risk for chafe will be covered with flexible plastic pipe or I will use a cable. Now sure yet. I relly like this boat in many many ways. This is just a little thing I want my way. We all "customize" our boats. I would encourage to give the 260 a serious look. Mine is a wb so it means reducing sail earlier but it sails fast anyway. We commonly sail 15 to 25 mph winds. Corky MeriCay

Rudder line chafing
Corky, my dealer just replaced the uphaul line. He told me that I was missing a sleeve over the rudder bolt. If the sleeve is missing, the line chafes on the threads of the bolt. I have disconnected the other line to the back of the rudder. It looks sloppy draggging in the water and is really not needed to raise the rudder. The rudder tends to pop up when the uphaul is released. My rudder does not seem to go straight down as pictured on some of the 26/260 sketches I have seen. It seems to have about a 15 degree angle off the perpendicular. Is this the same as the other 260 rudders out there? Bernie

Dear Bernie, The rudder does not appear perfectily vertical but as long as it is to the stop it is ok. That sheeve should be tricky to install. Corky

Bernie, If your rudder isn't straight down, very close to 90 degrees, I would think you are getting alot of resistance on the wheel/tiller. If you find your w/t hard to move, it's cuz yur rudder is not at 90 degrees. Sailon

Don't get me wrong-I've ordered the 270, to be delivered in a few weeks, so I'm told. I've just been tuning in to petty problems that owner's have had so as to prevent them if possible. I'm expecting this problem with the rudder rope and a few other minor things, and and looking forward to some modifications of my own. Please post the results of your pulley system if you decide to install it, if you would and thanks.

my rope's useless...
I have a 26 and have found the rope on the rudder to be useless. It's easier for me to just tighten the big wing nut until the rudder stays in place, and then when I need the rudder to come up, I just loosen the wing nut and it floats up. Works for me, but I'm open to suggestion.

I experienced the same symptoms with my rudder initially. Two symptoms: 1) rudder would not go down all the way 2) rudder was skewed to port My solution was to remove the lower bolt in the rudder post, and that solved both problems, rudder is completely down straight and no skew. Tom M.
