Rudder Rigging

While I didn't expect everything to be explained when I purchased my first boat (Mac '25), I did expect to be able to see how the previous owner set the boat up for sailing. Unfortunately, the person that owned it before me didn't know how it should be done either? HOW DO YOU RIG the RUDDER on a MAC '25? The extra holes in the rudder, pulley on the mounting with a cleat, and nothing to suggest how it all goes together to set the boat up for its maiden voyage as our boat? Any help, direction, or ideas would be greatly appreciated. The restoration has been great fun to this point, but anticipating our first sail is becoming unwanted pressure for first-time sailors......

Your rudder request

Richard, I just purchased a MacGregor 25, which needs to be restored. Like you, I am somewhat puzzled about the rudder. I do not have one, and trying to find. And like you, I do not have any istructions on how to install it. Nor do I know of anyone that knows how to rig on up properly. While I am sure we will figure it out, (we also own a Hobie Cat), it would be nice to have some help. Have you been able to locate anyone who could help you with the rigging and with your rudder issue? If yes, would you be willing to offer some advice? Bruce

I am a new owner of an 85 MAC 25. Fortunatly in good shape plus I made a friend with a guy who has one in my marina and has been a wealth of info. Ok to answer you question.... Your rudder I expect has two holes in it. With it fully lowered here is how it goes. Starting at the lower more forward hole thread one end of a 3/8 marine rope through the hole from Right (starboard) to left (port) and put a simple overhand knot to stop it from coming out of the hole. Next thread the rope under and then up through the pulley.....next continue up and over the cleat.....now back down to the other higher more aft hole and thread the rope through starboard to port and put a knot in it. Now before you put the second knot in with the rudder down pull the rope up (basically pulling the the rudder down into postion and with pressure......now tie off to the cleat....then put some slack between the cleat and the second hole and put in the knot. Now to raise the rudder un cleat and lift the rudder with the end of rope tied at the second hole.....once all the way rasied cleat it....loer it in reverse. I will try to attach a drawing. If this helps let me know. There are different rudders. Brian Muller

This may help you, too...

I think Brian has done us an excellent service. I hope to repay the favor. I know I wouldn't have figured it out.... I thought after I had the new motor installed I'd be in the water, but, as you can tell, that didn't happen... It will now!!!

Additional.....

When using my outboard prior to entering very shallow water, I center the tiller and use a bungie cord to fasten it to the stern rail. I then pull the rudder as far out of the water as possible and tie it off to the cleat. In that way, it would be impossible for a trailing rudder to make contact with the prop of the outboard.

I'll remember that one...

As yet, I haven't had the chance to try my boat in the water.... Imagine? Anyway, I had the motor installed and I'll remember to keep the rudder out of the way.... Thanks from a novice to just about everything....

I feel your pain

I too was hoping to be in the water by now but hopefully next weekend. I'm still trying to figure out all my rigging, not just the rudder but every bit of info helps. Do you have any pics of the mods you made? I plan to post mine in a couple of weeks as soon as I do the final clean up.

Sure...

I don't know whether you want how I went to two batteries - 1 starting and 1 deep-cycle - or doing a change over from Evinrude to Merc 9.9, but the info on the rudder works like a champ. I just completed doing all the soldering for all the wire connections that didn't seem to get done by the previous owner. Our shake-down cruise is scheduled for Thursday.. Talk about delays! It seems as I get one thing fixed, I find another to take care of before I set her in the water.... Oh well, that's an older boat.... still a blast to work on...
