I have a used 28 1991, I have an area on the rudder of about 1 sq ft that has some delamination. Any help in a fix would be useful. There is also a hole in the cockpit by the engine gauges for an instrument or gauge, but so far no luck as to what went there, or even if it was standard or an add on. Any information from other h28 owners would be good.

Bill, I'm going by memory from our 1989 H28...

the only guage that I remember was the tachometer with lights for oil pressure, temperature, etc. Terry

True

I agree with Terry. I was at my 1989 H28 yesterday, just a tach and temp toggle.

Delamination

First, someone may have rigged a temperature sensor for the engine. Something the boat really needs. There are a couple of way to install the sensor. You should read up on it and possible re-install the sensor. It is important to understand why the rudder delaminated. Are you in a region where the temperature goes below freezing? If so did water expand and damage your rudder? I saw someone repair his rudder by adding a few more layers of glass. His was pretty bad. You may be able to just epoxy paint yours. Remember to strip all the old bottom paint off first. Good Luck! I am sure she is a GREAT BOAT!

It happens

Bill This is not un-common My 1990 H-27 has a large rudder that had an area about 8" wide and 2' long delaminated on it. There was a void left by the MFG under the fiberglass in the foam core. The fiberglass chop strand mat developed blisters and water seeped into the void, causing delamination. I ground off the area that was delaminated and filled the void with a mixture of resin and micro-balloon fillers and glassed back over it, smoothed it out sanded and sealed the rudder with several coats of MAS Epoxy. See related link for MAS Epoxies. Good luck Jim
