rudder removal

Hi, Last summer while backing out of a slip in Detour Mi , my rudder hit on something and put a one inch by two inch notch on the bottom trailing edge. I have removed the rudder and repaired it but my question is are there any rudder post bearings or is it what it looks like and just a pipe within a pipe? If there is no bearing, am I suppose to use some kind of lubricant on the shaft before it is reinstalled? If the answer is yes then what kind of lubricant? I could have repaired the rudder in place but I also had to replace the cutlass bearing which meant that I had to pull the prop shaft and the rudder is in the way. Hopefully one of you have been through this and have some advice. Thanks in advance Phil

grease fitting

Not sure if this helps but my 31, which I assume may be the same, has a fitting for a grease gun (zerk fitting?)on the rudder tube. The fitting is accessable from the the lazerette. A little hard to reach but not too bad. Stick a grease gun on there and pump it till grease starts coming out the top. Of course, this is after you have the rudder back on the boat.
