I noticed on our 89 Catalina 30 there is a plastic, nylon ring around the rudder post just above the rudder that is loose. I can slide it around and lift it a little. I can also lift the rudder straight up about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch. Does this need fixing ? Is this common ? How to fix ? Any info would be great or leads on where to find more info would be great. Thanks CM

No Worry

That is normal. Not to worry. The rudder on my C30 has positive (near neutral) buoyancy. There are nylon washers between the hull and the rudder and between the top of the rudder tube and the tiller head. The rudder is free to move about 1/4" up and down in the tube. Your sounds like it has negative buoyancy (near neutral). Mine "floats" so the lower nylon washer keeps it away from the hull. Yours sounds like it "sinks" and the tiller head rests on the upper washer. No big deal either way.
