Hi all,
I'm refurbishing a 1981 Hunter 22 with a swing rudder (as well as keel). I'm about to rig up the line that hauls up the rudder (on its pivot pin). Here's my question: what hauls the rudder into the down position and keeps it there? I don't see any sign of hardware for a second line to draw the keel to its most foreward, full-down position. Is there a need for one?
Thanks,
Greg Martin

Greg,
There is no 'down-haul' line, the swing keel is counter-balanced with the lead in the keel so that when the line is let out, the keel naturally goes all the way down / forward. One can tie it off to a cleat if it is desired to only partly lower the keel into position.

As far as what keeps it there ... gravity .. and while heeled over, friction from the side-ways force.

OBTW there is a thread in "Hunter Owner Forums" , "smaller boats" section that discusses both the H22 swing keel and the rudder... @:

For your rudder question: I don't know the 22 but on the 23 the line on the rudder is what holds it down, once you cleat it in the cam cleat. It floats up if not cleated. The line runs through the cleat, down to a sheave on the aluminum rudder bracket's rear side, and then back up to an eye on the rudder's top edge. When you pull in the line it is hauling the top of the rudder rearwards, thus pulling it down.

Greg,
My mistake, I misread your entry. Are you talking about the rudder ONLY in this thread, or both the rudder AND the swing keel ??

Anyways...here are pix of my 1981 Hunter's swing KEEL trunk along with some diagrams. Hope this helps you in your KEEL endeavor.

My RUDDER is made by Ida Sailor (not original), and I like it TREMENDOUSLY !

Anywho, both the keel and rudder discussions are in the common thread mentioned above.

Thanks for your replies. Thanks also for pics. Actually, I'm rigging up both keel and rudder. On the keel, I hope to come up with a way to fasten the line that holds it in the down position so it will release itself if I run aground, so I don't bust off the keel.
I'm hoping to come up with a lever-action device that will put enough drag on the line to keep the keel down while underway, but will also allow the line to slip out under a greater load. Charlotte Harbor has numerous shallows, and I hope to go in close by swinging up.
