Sirs: I recently purchased a used sailboat, yet I know nothing of sailing or caring for the equptment as I am a powerboat fan. However, I want to try sailing 'cause I was told "try it you might like it". My question: my sailboat has a teak rudder. Said rudder was coated with (varnish?) some substance and was peeling and deteriorating. I stripped the rudder to bear teak. What process and protectorant do I use to protect the teak rudder? Sailboat will be used in salt water. I visited serveral boating stores and was told to use epoxy, epiglass, varnish, and nothing. HELP. Keep the bow to the breakers!! Thanks, Rebel

Marine varnish

Just use a few layers of Marine Varnish. One small quart can would be more than enough.

I like epoxy....

...get some at home depot. Follow instructions on the label. Dude, be careful!

Epoxy requires UV stabilization

Epoxy will provide an excellent, long-lasting, barrier coat for the rudder - but will require an overcoat with a UV protectorant. When it's all done, it won't look "teak" anymore - so if you want the teak look, stick with Varnish & expect to face continual upkeep.
