I am currently the Boating Director for Hohn Scout Reservation, Great Rivers Council; located near Laurie, Missouri on the Lake of the Ozarks. We had an unfortunate disaster happen to one of our docks this winter, resulting in our 1978 Hunter 27 being grounded. The result was substantial damage to the rudder, disabling the boat out of our sailing program until the rudder is fixed. Our budget is already stressed from digging a new well and other Aquatic Area repairs, and does not allow for purchase of a replacement rudder. My hope is that someone may be able to help us obtain a rudder that can be installed before the first week of Summer Camp in mid-June. Any donation is tax exempt. I can provide more information, if wanted. Please contact me by email at kwsxb3@umr.edu. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kelly

fix it

removing the rudder and shaft is not to difficult.Take off the tiller head first then crawl into q-berth and look for a stop collar with set screws,i've seen these under the tillerhead also, but mine was under deck above rudder tube.Blade and shaft should now slide out once collar is loose.Take it to a local machine shop,be specific about what is needed and tell them the type of metal(316 stianless?).Boat needs to be in lift to reinstall it,get help, blade and shaft is hefty.Best of luck,Ive been there and bent rudder shaft can be repaired.

If you....

....don't have access to a boat lift, you can always dig a hole for removal and installation. I removed mine on a 34 that way. :)

repair?

If the shaft is bent where it goes through the hull, if it is not bent to badly you should be able to have it straightened. (A friend had a similar problem, but I don't know how bad your rudder is.) Repair should be cheaper than new, and if done right should still be strong.
