Rudder post/tiller head shear pin

The pin sheared when the yard launched the boat and I am having a terrible
time getting the broken pin out. I don't know which end to put the punch to
and I can hardly see if the broken pin if lined up. Any suggestions? Should
I drill it?

The pin is tapered and drilling out is a very tricky operation given the location. An extractor is the best option, a recent broken pin in a UK boat came out relatively easy with an extractor.
My boat is on a drying mooring and great stress comes on the rudder twice a day. Last time I fitted a pin (about ten years ago) it lasted less than two weeks before breaking since then I have managed without one.
I put a mark on the rudder shaft so I know if the rudder is fore and aft and simply tighten the head up on the shaft with an allen key.

I had the same problem a few years ago.

As far as I can remember, once the pinch bolt was loose it was easy to tap the broken pieces out with a punch.

My visual memory is that the thick end was to port side but I'm not sure...

I started a thread back on the topic then that prompted some very useful replies.

Good luck.

I ended up drilling it. New 5/32 inch cobalt drill bit, stopped often to put
in a bit of oil, and took it easy. Not too bad a job but I don't want to
repeat it. I marked the side of the fitting where the thicker end is, so
next time there will be no doubt as to which end to put the punch to. And I
lightly notched the top of the rudder post and the bronze fitting so I will
know when it is lined up.

I have sailed with just the clamp holding the rudder post but I like knowing
that connection is really solid.

Nico,

Don't forget that you must first ream the hole remaining with a Tapered Pin Reamer to restore the tapered fit and then your "big end" thought will certainly work better when you install the new tapered pin.

Hi all,
Came across these old notes I made some time ago. FYI

-THERMOSTAT / COOLING:
-The MD6A manual states.. starts opening at 75C, fully open at 85C.
-The MD7A manual states.. starts opening at 60C, fully open at 74C. Bellows Thermostat.
-When in the marketplace, looking up the MD6A, shows a 60C thermostat.
-STANT: We do not have a 13980 part number. We have a few stats that are 54mm, 2.125" in diameter and 160F. 13396 is a by-pass thermostat. 13356 and 45356are not by-pass stats. I hope this was some help Chris HoffmanStant Inc.choffman@...
A Stant 160F stat starts to open at 160F (+/- 3) and is full open at 175-180F.
-Volvo p/n: 875796(-5?). 60C. Also maybe 833366, 829812
-Sierra p/n 18-3665. 60C.
-Stant. Lou. 410-446-0063
-also finding a ORB15796 part number.
-The original appears to be a non-bypass unit. and from the pdf exploded views, appears to mount with the sping side into the exhaust manifold.

-WATER PUMP / COOLING

-The original pump Model 11260-2101 was fitted to the Volvo Model MD6A.
This was then changed to Model 29300-2201C. My suggestion to obtain this
pump would be to first try Depco Pumps - 1-800-446-1656. Depco maybe able
to assist you with this pump, if not you will have to contact Volvo
directly. David J. Caldwell, Prod Manager, ITT Flow Control (Jabsco).

*-Depco. George quoted $235 for new Johnson pump. 10-35157-6(5?), Type F35B-9
This is the latest part and is not same as original. Needs two wing things
to mount on the MD6A. Cost about $10ea. 01-43238. 800-446-1656 ORDERED 9/08
