I have a 1977 Hunter 30 . The Rudder was actually in the Cockpit Stainless Post ripped in half)=. Well I repaired the Rudder and Sleaved the Rudder post with a smaller size stainless steel pipe. Went to intall it today (= The Rudder does not stay in the block ? It keeps sliding out? Looks Like at the bottom of the rudder there is a SS Nipple. On the Hull there are 4 Holes a bracket may have been there? ANY IDEA WHAT THIS BRACKET LOOKS LIKE?? I will have to fabricate one and if anyone has a photo or can send a link??? ((PLEASE))
Thanks Rich

The skeg is a small fixed fin that is attached to the bottom of the boat generally right in front of the rudder. Does you boat have a skeg? On my 1981 H-30 the forward edge of the rudder fits into the concave aft end of a small skeg. The rudder post at the top of the ruder is the top pivot point and at the bottom there is a bronze (I think or maybe stainless) shoe that act as a hinge or pivot point that hold the bottom of the rudder in place and prevents the rudder from dropping down. If your rudder broke at some point especially as a result of hitting something it is probable that the shoe broke off. Maybe Hunter has an idea of the fitting that they used.

PS if you don't have a skeg you probably have a spade rudder, if so there is usually some kind of retaining bushing that keeps the rudder from dropping out. On my H-27 it was a bolt at the top of the rudder post. If you do have a skeg and Hunter is not helpful you might try contacting Foss Foam. The rebuild a lot of rudders and probably can give you some ideas.....

Here's a pic of a skeg on a H-30 (year unknown) with a rudder. If you enlarge the pic you can see the shoe fitting on the bottom of the skeg that support the foot of the rudder. Hope this helps
