I lost this cover plate. I checked with Rudy at D&R and he hadn't seen one like it. Anyone with an O'Day 28 have a similar cover (you can see the shafrom the picture the weathering)? Any suggestions on how to replace it?

I ALWAYS hated that cover, a Hockey Puck, up my butt every time I sat on it.
You can take the dimensions, and go to Home Depot, and in the Plumbing Department, they sell the exact size
FLAT, plastic, white cover for an exact replacement, and cheap, will last forever.
Take the opportunity to spray some lubricant down the post!

Thanks Coyote. I purchased this boat 17 years ago. The previous owner must have changed out the circular cap that you described for a larger flat cover that we secure to the deck by 2 small screws. You can in the picture that I uploaded the outline from weathering of the old cover. Since this looks to have been a custom fabrication it seems like going to the Depot for a replacement cap makes more sense. So here's one follow up question: The ruder post look to be held in place by a fiberglass sleeve. There is about 1/16" space between the fiberglass sleeve and the circular cut out in the deck. The cap you describing is to fit over the sleeve and into deck cut out. But that won't be a water tight seal. Is it okay for rain water and wash down to drain into the deck ?
when I did mine, it was two screws, the cover fit over the sleeve, and about 1/2" +/- of overage, put some caulk/sealant around the edges, and good to go. I replaced a wooden "puck" that was about 1/2" high, and even under a cushion, stuck up my butt!
Ok, thanks. I will look around the Home Depot's plunging department for something that will work.
West marine sells deck access covers which were oem on my 84. Basically any cover with the proper sealent will work. I used butyl tape that accommodated the curve of the deck. You do want to keep it dry. Water will rot the deck core and drain into the rudder causing delamintion. While on the hard you should drill a small hole low on one side of the rudder to see how much water drains out. As it is coming out of saturated foam it comes out slowly, you may only see the water stain . Reseal with epoxy. The small clearance in the rudder tube should be greased via a zerk fitting on the aft side.
