Now that my 2001 Hunter 320 is stored in the marina barn, I notice the rudder has some side play. What can and/or should be done about this discovery?

1/8 inch at end propably OK

According to a recent article in one of the sailmags. If it's more, you need to find the source of the play in the post, bearings and structure that hold it. Then you should repair/replace to tighten it back to spec. I think that Hunter would be an excellent help on a recent hull like the 320. David Lady Lillie

Flapping

My new 310 had excessive play (1-2"!!) at the bottom. Huntrer sent me new nylon bushes but they were the same size as the old. They contributed to the cost of getting new nylon bushes made but would not recognise there was a problem. When you pull your rudder check the condition of the Stainless bearers. They should be 316 steel, but mine attracted a magnet, indicating inferior. Pitting was already obvious, but Hunter didn't want to know! Make sure your new bushes are the appropriate grade for underwater use, as other grades swell considerably!!! Good luck with the job - let me know if I can help further js@screenmedia.tv
