Rudder Pintle problem

After working like a dog over the 4th I went to my boat on the 5th and found that the rudder had dropped off. I fished it out of the drink and discovered that the bottom (new) pintel pin was missing and the older (top) one had sheared off. Has anyone ever expierenced this problem ? My only surmise is that with the heavy traffic in the Toms River on the 4th the pitch and yaw became to much and caused the shear ? Would this be an accurate assumption? It is a 78 C-22 with a kick up rudder by the way

Just a guess...

Howdy, Jim. I just moved from New Brunswick. Since you say your bottom pin was new, I'm guessing something wasn't done correctly in the installation, causing it to fall off. Without the bottom pin, the rudder would sway back and forth with the wave action and would then shear off the top pin. That's my guess.

I agree with Rick

Jim: I agree with Rick. I usually put double nuts on mine. I guess you could use a Stainless Steel nut with the nylon insert to keep it from coming off. Probably though, your new one was tightened too tightly and broke in tension, and this allowed the old one to be sheared. Your lucky that you could retrieve the rudder. Aldo

Aldo Rich Thanks for the info I confess to being one of those people who tend to torque down on things so when I put the next set on I'll use a lock nut. Finding the rudder wasn't that hard with the boat pole bringing it up however was fun. Thanks again JIm

I ship my rudder

On my C-22 with a standard rudder, I always ship my rudder at the end of a sail placing it inside the cabin with a pad and angled against the starboard side bulkhead ahead and below the gally. The reason for this, addition to the problems you experinced, is to keep the rudder dry. If left in the cock pit, rain could possibly get in through some small cracks. I have an outwater mooring, and as my rudder is dry, it floats, as I discovered when I accidentally dropped it into the drink when trying to get it onto the gudgeons.

terminology

If you remove the rudder its operational position and put it in the boat, you have unshipped the rudder. To ship the rudder is to put it in place for steering.

Toms River on the 4th

Jeff; I sail out of the Gilford Park Yatch Club but my Cat winters with Gordon at Nelsons. In fact the boat used to be one of Nelson's rentals. The chop at the Yatch Club you would not beleive. See you on the river Jim
