when anchored with slight wave action the rudder makes a banging noise making sleeping impossible. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The boat is from 1986, does wear and tear play a role?

possibly hitting the hull?

On my 240, the rudder extends under the hull about 3" or so. When tied off, light waves sometimes cause it to "float up" and hit. It also does this at times surfing downwind. I am fitting a sleeve between the hairpin clip on the pintle and the bottom of the gudgeon (spelling?). This will take up the space and keep the rudder from hitting. Prev Owner had let boat sit a lot last year, and the top corner of the rudder actually wore/broke off and I had to rebuild it.

Do you tie it off?

Not sure - does the 272 have a tiller or a wheel? but here are a couple of suggestions/ideas ... I am not sure of the 272 but on my 23 we tie the rudder off every time we anchor or are on a mooring. This way it stays centered and the tiller does not hit the sides of the cockpit or the stern rail. If you tie the rudder off then perhaps you are hearing some looseness in the tiller handle. This can be fixed by the using some shims between the handle and the nuts and tightening everything. Finally, no insult intended but .... are you sure it's the rudder and not the halyards banging against the mast? I use a shock cord to keep the halyards off the mast when the boat is "at rest". If I don't then any wave action causes them to slap against the mast and ...bang bang bang all night long. Hope this helps Happy sailing and sleeping James

centreboard

You have likely nailed the issue and the two previous posts have the solution. It might also be the centreboard. Likely you don't have a centreboard on your boat, but on my daysailer, mine bangs around if there is no pressure on it while down. I raise it all but an inch or two while at anchor. This keeps it from dancing around the anchor in light air.

Gudgeons...

The gudgeons on my 25 are worn and it makes that banging noise. I think wear makes the hole in the gudgeon bigger and even oblong. I think that either replacement or adding a third pintel and gudgeon my help. r.w.landau
