Has anyone tried the rudder downhaul modificatioins illustrated by George Kobernus? The blocks placed inside the post call for a 1/4" line - it seems too light. We'd like to try installing it this weekend but would like to know if others have had success.

I just competed the rudder mods your considering. I also added the quick release cleat. I however used a 5/16" nylon/poly line. It feels better on the hands than 1/4" and seems to work and fit just fine. Only tried it for one afternoon so far.

You'd be surprised how strong a good quality 1/4 line is however, I'm not really sure about the size I used. All I know is it works great with the CL257 camcleat and the microblocks. Both the microblocks and the cleat call for 1/4 inch. 5/16 will probably work but make sure the line you use is durable because if you use it for the CL257 camcleat it has to hold well and not be subject to abrasion. You don't want a line that is so slick that it won't hold in the camcleat.

Also, make sure you have an extra screw and cam for the cleat. There was a mod to the CL257 in 2005 to make it less likely for the screw to come loose. However, I lost one just fooling with the adjustment. Since I stopped messing with it, I've had no problems.
