Epoxy

Hello John, Clean and sand down the grooves and fill with a good epoxy filler such as Interlux's Watertite. Then you can paint or gelcoat as you see fit.

I'll get back to you soon

John: I'll research my replies in a few days for you. I'm in the middle of some projects with my son at school now. But it does sound like you may have a rudder kicking-up problem. If it just moves back an inch, it makes a huge difference in tiller pressure. I would be very concerned about breaking something if I had to hold onto the tiller with too hands. The only time I can remember having to do that is when we have our boat surfing when running with sails that are way to big for the wind and waves. But we don't usually get too much wind on the Chesapeake in the summer. Aldo

The 3 washers were

probably installed to take up any clearance between the rudder & the aluminum plates. I installed a 1/4" thick soft rubber washer at that location, approx 6" in diameter with a 3/8" hole. Glued this to one side of the rudder. 1/8" on each side of the rudder would be better. This provides enough friction to stop any rudder creep. Regards, Bob B.

Beaching Rudder

Aldo is exactly on, any aft positioning of a beaching rudder will cause great helm torque issues even with otherwise normal amounts of weather helm. Not sure how the C22 beaching rudder is configured, but the one on the C250 used a rivet-detent along with compression to hold the rudder down and that system proved not very good. A little wear and the rudder lagged aft an inch or so and caused excessive torque. My fix was to change to a bungee hold down by adding a cheek block and cleat. This system has worked great for many years now with the advantage of holding the rudder fully forward to the stop, self returning the rudder down after a grounding, and providing both pull up and pull down lines. Here is a pic of the conversion http://www.stewartfam.net/arlyn/rudder.jpg

John, I found the link

John: Here's the link to the reply that you were asking about. I agree with the replies that you have received from Bob, Arlyn, and Dick. Do you want me to take a photo of the rudder and pin that I use? My rudder is in the garage now, so I can take one. I'm finally able to start cleaning up our boat for the upcoming summer. Aldo
