Al--I have a 1977 Hunter 30. I expect to have to replace the bearings on the rudder (starting to have play). The rudder is held in place by a bearing at the top inside the boat and above the water line. There is a skeg in front of the rudder extending to the bottom where there is also a bearing supporting the bottom of the rudder. My question is what is the correct way to remove the rudder ( in water??or not) and where does one buy the bearings? Thanks for your efforts. I imagine that most of us here are interested in this info. Thanks again, Henry -- Boca Raton, FL.

Rudder play

I also have a '77 h30 and just removed and rebedded the skeg. I would haulout to remove the rudder. When you do that you might discover that the cup on the aft portion of the skeg supporting the rudder has deteriorated as was the case with mine. A simple refabrication of the support cup might take care of your play problem. In fact, you may be able to diagnose and remedy this without removing the rudder. Hope this little bit of info helps some. -Roland S/V Fraulein II

good question

Henry, I am not too familiar with rudder installation. I understand that the lower part of the skeg needs to be removed to remove the H-30. While many rudders can be removed while the boat is in the water it may prove too difficult to remove the skeg underwater. You should check with Hunter Marine or Southcoast Marine 727-573-4821 on the bearings. Good luck, let me know if you have any more questions. Al Walker Foss Foam
