just put one on

I was able to put it below the quadrant on my '80 Hunter 33. If you have the newer 30 there is not much room under or over the quadrant. The idea is to match the swing of the rudder post by mounting the rudder sensor so that it can connect to the quadrant. The important thing is to line the rudder sensor up so that it is in line with the rudder post fore to aft. Not ahead or behind the rudder. If this is not clear tell me and I will give it another try. If you can not line it up with the rudder post fore and aft, you may be able to position it so that it matches the turn of the quadrant left and right. In that the quadrant moves in a circle around the post you should be able to attach the sensor at any point and make it work. It will just take a little thinking of where to mount it best. The idea is to follow the quadrant left and right as it turns.

thanks for the input where did you mount the compass the instructions advise on the water line in the center of the boat but 39" from any metal like engine or keel not too far forward or to far back ?

fluxgate compass location

Mounted it in the galley cabinet below the sink. Attached it close to the centerline, low and backwards to the installation drawings. Checked with Raymarine this installation is not a problem and the tech. said it was o.k. to be under the waterline. The computer takes care of the compass direction when you swing the compass during the sea trail. You are going to like your autopilot when you get it set up. Makes doing anything when under sail or power so much easier. A tip on mounting the attachment point to the quadrant. I just used a hose clamp around one of the quadrant arms. the attachment point is only pushing or pulling the sensor and doesn't need to be all that strong, just solid is all. Also, had to move in the rudder stop blocks as the swing should not be much more than 30+ degrees or the sensor may be broken.

thru hulls

likely the head thru hull out is already closed. Normally the head discharge is into a holding tank and then pumped out at a marina or in the U.S. three miles off_shore. But, you likely have a galley sink drain that exits below the waterline and should have a shut-off valve to close it. My head sink discharge is above the water-line but low so I added a shut off at the sink so outside sea water doesn't come in when heeled over. You will find there is always something left undone when leaving the boat at the slip. And always something more that the boat needs to make it better :)
