rudder gasket material

Can anyone tell me the name of the red gasket type material that is glued to the insides of the aluminium rudder cheeks used as a friction break.

Red rubber, or styrene butadiene rubber (SBR). It can be bought as sheet stock and cut by using your old gaskets as patterns. I used rubber cement to glue it into the rudder head plates. BrianW

I've been in the gasket business for 44 years and I'd be hesitant about using red rubber or SBR rubber in this application; albeit, that is what was used as OEM material. Red rubber is SBR and is susceptible to ozone attack; which is why you need to replace it. EPDM rubber or neoprene have excellent ozone resistance and would be my first choice. They will most probably be black in color. May be obtained at most any local gasket fabricator.

Thanks Gasketbob! The water-ballasted boats have about a 6" round plate on the hull's bottom that seals the inlet and drain for the water ballast compartment. My H26 has a red rubber gasket here. While the seal is not perfect, it keeps mass quantities of water from flowing in and out of the ballast tank inlet. Gasketbob, what gasket material would you recommend for this? Thanks, BrianW

Brian,

Either the EPDM or the Neoprene that you decide to go with for your rudder brake is acceptable for this service as well. If you're only replacing the "red gasket" on this plate; then, red rubber (SBR) is fine.
