I recently purchased a 1985 O’Day 222. The boat came with a homemade rudder and tiller constructed by the previous owner that do not work. Does anyone know where to purchase a replacement rudder/tiller or where to obtain the specs so that I could build a new one? Thanks.

New Tiller

About 2-3 weeks ago I read something about a company called Fosset Foam or Fossit Foam they supplied O'Day with rudders. I checked their web site quickly and didn't find much but with a little more effort you might find something. At least this is a start; someone might read this (jog their memory) and supply more info for your search. I hope this helped!

Rod Johnson,

D&R Marine

D&R Marine stocks (or can make) rudders for most of the O'Days. Foss Foam was the supplier for the larger O'Day boats (with inboard rudders) and can still make a rudder for those models, however..I have been told that the rudders from D&R Marine are solid rather than foam core and so don't tend to split open like the originals. D&R Marine is run by Rudy Nickerson who was the Parts Dept. manager for O'Day for many years. When O'Day went out of busioness, Rudy bought up a lot of (if not all) the parts inventory and is now THE source for O'Day parts, he is reasonably priced too! D&R can sell you the OEM rudder for the 222. D&R Marine (508) 644-3001

Compare prices between Newrudders.com and D&R. I found Newrudder was less money for a rudder for my 272. You have to compare shipping charges and taxes. John R.

I wrote before I read Rod J.'s responses. I had contacted Rudy but I did not ask how his rudders were made. I'll have to contact him again.

NewRudders.com is foss foam of Florida. Not to be confused with Foss Foam of Calif. I belive they were once related to the Foss Foam of California fossfoam.com but not the same firm now. I heard the story once or twice but never committed it to memory.
