Rudder Flutter

After the better part of the season, I've noticed a consistent "high-speed" flutter or vibration in the tiller. I don't notice it when we're motoring, but definitely when we're under sail. The faster we go under sail, the more pronounced the flutter / vibration. But I don't recall that its linked to the amount of weather or lee helm. There isn't any build-up of slime on the rudder and the tiller is attached securely. I don't think its the original rudder, but I think it is an exact replacement. The rudder seemed like it was OK when we mounted it in the spring and the boat handles GREAT. It just has this vibration. *o Is this due to turbulence coming off of the [shoal] keel or is it some kind of early warning of a problem?

Mine vibrates too

Since it's very low amplitude and only happens above a certain speed, I take it as a good sign. Once I drop back below a certain speed the vibration stops. I suspect it's a minor imbalance somewhere, or maybe turbulenct flow coming off the trailing edge of the blade. I wouldn't worry about it. Peter H23 "Raven"

Thanks

The issue actually came up when a Catalina 25 owner took the tiller and noted the vibration.

Like Peter

I experience vibration on my h23 above certain speeds (without a knotmeter, I don't know the threshold speed). Having talked with other sailers, I suspect its merely harmonic vibration and not impending disaster (i.e. the Tacoma Narrows bridge). Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

Worn Pintles

My rudder has alot of free play in it and it is due to the severly worn pintles
