There are two possibilities. Both of them are not good.

One...Delamination of the rudder. My Catalina 30 MK II is a 1990 and it had a delaminated rudder. I made the old owners put a new rudder on the boat before I bought it.

Two: The way the rudder attaches is up in the steering box. There is a big pullie that is two parts. There is one bolt that goes through the middle of the rudder. If that broke the rudder could drop.

You need to have this looked at and probably need to have the boat put on the hard. If the bolt broke it is a PITA to repair but not nearly as bad as putting a new rudder in.

I was there when they put the new rudder on my boat. It was quite the job.

If the bolt broke there is a good chance that you could loose your rudder. Better get that attended to quickly!
