I just had a 89 35.5 surveyed and the rudder was found to be delaminating. To my untrained eye the affected areas were quite large. Vertical area 5" wide and 2-2.5' high fore and aft of the post on the port side plus various 8" bubbles on both sides. Can someone give me a rough guide as to what it will cost to have a competent shop repair the rudder? Basically I am trying to figure out if it is worth repairing vs. replacing. Seems like a new one (from Foss Foam) will be in the US$1800 range. Thanks Jeff

About 2/3 of the new cost,

based strictly on my recollection from this site and from a boat neighbor's experience. I think what you have to weigh is the condition of the shaft and frame. Good luck, RD

Replace it!!!

The extra cost will be worth it, if any of the shaft or plate inside the rudder has started to rust. Having one break is not fun.

Rudder Experience

I had Foss (florida) rebuild my rudder using the original post and frame. A weld broke on the frame a few years later and I bought a new rudder. Generally yards charge about $700 in my area to repair these. Foss gets about $1200 plus shipping for a new one as I recall. A sailing budder just got a new rudder for his Ericson from Foss in California. Not sure if they are associated with Florida but he got a larger, heavier, better made rudder delivered air freight to Vermont for $900. (and installed it himself) Barry
