I would like to connect the rudder assembly to a Merc 9.9 kicker. I have searched the archives but they are without links and photos for the most prt.

Would you have photos or a diagram to make this assembly?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

I have wheel steering if that makes a difference.

How about some pictures of that wheel steering on a Mac 25? Ware do you stand? How close is the boom?

Here is a Photo of the wheel on a Mac 25...
It was the previous owners... I heard it was a factory option in 1984...
It clears the boom but the boom sheet control lines kind of cross in front of you...
Lost a pair of glasses from it once...

If I recall, Sum did this but tied the tiller to the motor which is easier to disconnect without leaning over the transom

With the quick release snap shackles it's a "snap" : poor pun, but the system works.

This is probably one of the simplest solutions I have seen. I saw it a couple of weeks ago but I can't remember where. This is how I remember it.
The bungee is stretched and pull the motor to port when the rudder moves to port. The cable pulls the motor to center and starboard when the rudder moves to starboard. They can be hooked up with quick disconnects for a fast setup and tear down.

I just mocked this system up on my 25 but could not get it to work the angles were all wrong, do you have this motor mount?
Yes, I have the same mount and it works beautifully. I lowered the motor to operating position, and using a level marked a spot from the eye bolt on the motor to the equal spot on the trailing edge of the rudder. There I inserted a screw eye and connected the two via the pvc tube with snap shackles.

Caguy: Using that method, isn't the motor always under tension to pull to port?

Yes, the bungee pulls to port but the cable prevents it from going there so it stays put until the rudder moves to port.
If you are concerned about the tiller and rudder being pulled to port that maybe a concern, but I believe the bungee and cables are disconnected while under sail.

Another idea is to add a second bungie from the rudder to the starboard side of the boat. This will eliminate the pull to port and also give you a "snap to center" on the rudder when you let go or ease steering pressure.

Great idea on the bungee and tiller connect...I wanted to do this same thing to my boat, but I have a motor that won't swing to port because the handle gets in the way of the motor well, even when the handle is lifted up. So I wanted to attach something that would allow the motor to at least turn to starboard with the tiller so I don't get the rudder in the prop when I turn that way. Something similar to that setup with the bungee and cable in the front of the motor would probably work...

If you did that the bungee would not pull the motor to port when the rudder moves that way. I think other than a tiller tamer you would have to live with a little "weather helm" while motoring.

25 edson wheel set up.

Bruce (ABK), how does that wheel setup connect to the rudder?
It's connected by a series of cables. It's attached through the transom and is sealed with boot. Frankly, it gets in the way. I think I would be better off with the tiller. Although I really don't know because he only Tiller I used was in 1974 on the sunfish. It appears to be a major install. I don't think it's something that I would even attempt to do.

It looks pretty cool. I'll trade you a tiller for it. :D
