I have a 12" X 6" coating blister on the side of my rudder. The blister is right down to the fiberglass. What are the layers of coatings comming off. Are these layers of barrier coatings? Can I feather the edges and re-coat with new barrier materials? Please advise.

Rudder Problems

when I saw that on my vessel there was water inside the rudder that expanded when it froze during winter storage. Avoid buying a new FOSS rudder, they are junk and overpriced

WOW

James I'd have to disagree with Daryl - I guess I just joined a large group... The answer depends on what blistered - the rudder may have been barrier coated or it may not which could indicate the fiberglass blistered with no internal damage or, again, it might not be. If barrier coated, it's a simple matter to see if the glass has also delaminated which is a worst-case scenario. In this event, you'll need to remove the glass and underlying foam to determine if the rudder grid-to-rudder shaft is rusted and repair that, replace the foam, re-glass and paint. It's unlikley you'll need a new rudder. You should easily be able to tell from a close inspection if the blistered marerial is simply the barrier coat or is actually glass. To be safe, you REALLY need to find out why this happened rather than just "bandaid" a repair.

Most of us...

disagree with Daryl, don't be misled. You need to determine if the "blister" is, in fact, on top of the glass or inside of it. From your description, if it is in the layers of barrier and or bottom paint, it shouldn't be a big deal. If it truely is inside the rudder assembly and underneath the fiberglass, listen to Don and maybe pull up as many articles from the archives as possible that relate to rudder delamination. Not the end of the world.

Thanks

Thanks for the info and yes the inner fiberglass is still intact. The blister is the barrier coatings. I sanded/feathered the edges and put the first coat of Interlux barrier on Tuesday morning when the north/east was 58F. We are now 32F so the next three coats will take a while.
