Hey guys, any information out there on bushing that is in the rudder. I have called Hunter and was refered to the company that made it, they have all the dimensions EXCEPT the outside diameter. I have also been told that the Skag must be removed. has anyone done this type of replacement..any ideas, does the boat need to be hauled out for replacement ..does the skag need to be removed?? thanks

Replaced mine

Hi Don, I have a 76 h30 and I replaced my bushing when I had the skeg dropped. I had a new one made at a machine shop using the old one as a guide. You will have to drop the skeg to replace the bushing. Good luck, Royce

Hey Royce

My bushing is missing, so I have nothing to use, do you have the dimensions of yours( I belkieve my is 1-1/2" long, 3/4" inside diameter BUT I don't know what the outside is supposed to be...let me know ALSO on the skeg, does it drop from the inside of the boat down or from the bottom of the skeg. You can call me at 407-702-4731 Thanks Don

Another idea

I removed my skeg and rudder this spring, and ran into all sorts of problems. It had been removed in the past, and was was not reassembled cleanly. You may not run into any problems, but if your only problem is the lower bushing, it seems like a lot of work to remove the skeg to replace it. Royce, what do you think about this suggestion for Don's specific problem: Since your bushing is already gone, just do the west system ID job on the bottom bearing. Sand it all well, wax the stub, tape the bottom and fill with the graphite epoxy mixture. Or even find a way to have a bushing made that you could install from the bottom of the skeg, and glass in place. Just a thought, good luck John

Bushing replacement

When I replaced mine, I went from the bottom up, thru the skeg, installed the bushing and West System epoxy holds it in. I left a small hole in the bottom of the skeg at first to support the rudder while the initial epoxy set up, but after that it was smooth going. I repaired mine 5 years ago and have had no trouble with it since. (knock on fiberglass) Good luck!!
