Are we able to buy a new rudder bracket for a 260. The welds on mine broke. I do have a welder who will look at it but was just wondering if one could buy one?
If this one broke, I'd go with the local welder! I mean, he couldn't possibly do worse. But seriously, you might want to have him fabricate a new one rather than repairing the old one, if you could scare up the boat bucks.
Yeah that is the route to go. Fabricate a new one that is beefier. The original bracket is 26 years old. I guess stress over the years has weakened the welds. It popped off suddenly on the port bracket, breaking off cleanly , then since only one bracket was holding the rudder that weld weakened and tore halfway off before I could raise the rudder. We should all check the welds on our now older 260,s although this one just suddenly failed.
this forum storer has the build list of parts for your boat. You will never knot the stresses what that part was put through. I believe the new ones are beefier. Al has been selling that part since 1998 at Hunter and now SBO.
FYI on broken rudder bracket. I had a welder fix my broken rudder bracket. The two panels that were welded to the post had faulty welds. He showed me that the original welds were not centered, most of the weld was on the panel and very little was on the post. This could have been on mine only . Hope that is the case,
he welded both sides and also added a stainless strap. It now is way stronger than the original.
