Radial Drive Adjustment

Hey Chris, This is a nasty job if you are a large bodied person like myself; otherwise it's pretty simple. Empty out the cockpit locker, and get 2 1/2" wrenches; I think it's 1/2 inch, maybe 7/16". Crawl down into the locker head aft and follow the steering cables back to the radial drive hub. You should see 2 eye bolts attached to the cables that come out of the hub. on the back of these are the adjustment nuts to tighten up the cables. Be sure to take care when you're checking the cables so as not to get cut with fishhooks (broken cable strands) on the wire. A good way to check the cable is to put on a heavy glove and run a tissue paper up and down the cable. If the paper snags you have a broken strand and should replace the cable. Now if I have misread your question and you are talking about wear on the rudder bearings (nylon bushings really); that's a whole nother answer. PM

A little wrenchin'

*sry Chrisotpher: I guess I'm not sure of what you mean when you say the steering system has "radial play". Perhaps if you were to describe the symptoms a bit I may be able to help out. I pulled my rudder the fall of '03 and reinstalled it the spring of '04. Pulling and replacing it is a fairly straight forward task. A bolt here a nut there and the help of a pal on the ground to grab the rudder when it slides out and you're done. However dealing with the cables is something I haven't done yet. I did have to adjust them somewhat when I installed the rudder but that is a matter of backing off a jam nut and turning an adjuster till the cable tension and the rudder position relative to the quadrant position looks good. That said, it is a squeeze to get back in there and if you are unsure of how things go back together I'd take a digital photo of it for insurace. Good Luck Mike S/B PitterPat, Lake Huron

oday 28 rudder

HI, Chis, I to don"t know what you mean of radial play I think you mean there is play in the rudder when you turn the wheel,? if thats the case there is a grease fitting in the center of the rudder shaft which I think nobody ever greases it I got myself carefully in the hatch and up to the rudder shaft with a grease gun and punped and pumped it took a lot of grease until it apeard out of the top of the shaft which was the bottom of the radial wheel I think it was never grease. After that my wheel feels like I had power steering. If this is any help its a maintance item. Let me and others know what you think . Frederick Pierce.

oday 28 Rudder Grease

Hi, Mike, The tube of grease I have was a Marine Lube "A" multi-purpose grease. this tube I had for a couple a years. You can use most any marine grease use for wheel bearings etc. The tube that I have was a cream color and I use a small grease gun to pump it in . Its to COLD and I mean COLD out its spring job to do Good Luck. Frederick Pierce. I have a 85 -28 oday

Grease

The type of grease I used when I reinstalled the rudder was common automotive bearing grease the type you'd use on ball joints, U joints, etc. After all, those auto components are exposed to salt water (michigan winter) and harsh dirt, sand, heat, and so on. The grease fitting is a common zerk fitting that you can service with a grease gun and a flex hose. Mike
