rudder and tiller missing

I recently purchased a 1978 Catalina 22 and when I got it home the rudder and tiller are missing. My boat repaiman says the only solution is to have them made at a considerable expense. Are there other solutions?

There Sure Is !

You can purchase a new rudder and tiller from Catalina Direct. The price quoted in their parts list is $36.80 for Oak, and $245.70 for a standard rudder blade. Of course, like everything else these days, the prices have probably gone up some.Either way, it would certainly be a lot cheaper than having something "custom" made.Good Luck !

One more thing!

Ron, that is unfortunate. Ed P. is correct. But don't forget to order the rudder blade casting. There is a small spring loaded tang that keeps the pins for the rudder casting attached. If it was missing it the whole assembly may have bounced out or been stolen. All you need is the Tiller, Blade and Casting. Catalina Direct is the only way to go! Good luck with your new C22!

Hi There,Is there any possibility that the previous owner has them stashed away some place and just forgot to give them to you?When in storage I don't keep mine on the boat.If not then I'm sure Catalina Direct will be able to fix you up.Dave LaPere

Thanks for all the good information. I really appreciate it. In case you were wondering how I bought a boat without a rudder and tiller (kind of like buying a car with no steering wheel,) here's how it happened. The local community college has a "send your boat to college" in which boats are donated to the college to be sold to raise scholarship money. My C22 was one of these boats. When I bought it from the college, they said that they had stored all of the loose parts inside the college so that they would not be stolen. They found the sailbag, but they could not find the rudder and tiller. Anyway, they are still looking but I believe that I am going to have to purchase one. Anyway, that's how to buy a boat with no rudder. Thanks again.

Check out this link, they are dismantling a C22 and selling it piece by piece. I see there is still a rudder available. Good Luck.
