The work is not so much influenced by the water which will enter the boat. That can be managed. The problem is removing the cutlass bearing and maybe the rudder if it impeded the removal of the shaft. I have on idea how much room you have on a H30 between the shaft and rudder but just working on the cutlass underwater seems impractical.

Water

Wow sounds like too much work while lots of water will be coming into the boat and so think you should do the job on the hard especially if you have never done this kind of work.
Check Mainsail web site,I pretty sure he shows how it is done and explains the info.

What rubber hose, the stuffing box hose or do you have a dripless seal? You need about six inches between the end of the shaft and the coupler to get the stuffing box off and then the hose if that is what has split. Hardest part is getting the shaft out of the coupler and MaineSail's site shows how to do that I think. Then you can slide the stuffing box and hose forward quickly and stuff rags around the shaft at the stern tube. But you need six inches between the prop and rudder to get the shaft back far enough. Then slide the box and hose off and install the new one. Like has been said, much easier out of the water. Cheap as I am I would try it at the dock first.

Just noticed that you have an H30. There might not be six inches between the end of the stern tube and the coupler.

OMG

Yes we all try to save but if you try at the dock make sure the lift is ready if you can't get the coupler off or any other problems you may need to pull her out of the water, depends how rusty things look.
Mainsail will show or tell you what could go wrong and read his info ,how bad is it leaking and can it wait until winter haul or go for it and make sure the lift is available.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, will be hauling the boat as soon as word comes from the yard. being a Hunter 30 there is not enough room to complete the job in the water.
