i use an aluminum row boat to get the my mooring. i end up hanging about 5 bumpers out on each side, which is a pain when getting it out of the small lift i have for it and it doesn't always protect my 39 yr old oday 20.

i am trying to figure out if there is something cheap that i could put on the aluminum rub rail so i didn't have to use bumpers. i don't care what it looks like as long as it works and would be quick and cheap. i am thinking of exterior duck tape :) any one have a better idea?

Go to your local fire department. Ask for a discarded fire hose. Great canvas cover over rubber. Left overs from your gunwales make great chafe wear for dock an anchor lines.

Cheap. Well, there's nothing works quite so well as old fire hose, like Bill says. My Grandfather used it on the dock as long as I can remember. And it's free.

On my 8' pram with mahogany rub rails, Granddad went and bought some white garden hose, and we screwed that into the rub rails with oval screws and countersink washers. Not nearly as big as fire hose. I think it still exposed some mahogany to barnacles from time to time, but you could also see that there was pretty brightwork underneath. I don't think garden hose would work for most aluminum rowboat gunwales I've seen...

But if you wanted to pay for something... maybe you could pick up some pool noodles at the local dollar store, slit them, and fit them over the gunwales. Mind you, they won't last long in the sun, and they might not work too well, but they could be cheap.

I did put pool noodles on my lifelines to be back cushions when sitting on the cockpit coaming and leaning back. I do not expect them to last much more than a season, what with them being a polyethylene foam, and UV taking a toll on PE, but for $2, I can swap out frequently if need be. Cheaper than buying Sunbrella covered cushions...

I found a $3 pool noodle at the local Dollar General store, that had a significantly larger hole down the center. I cut a slit, and I now put my Ruddercraft straight wood tiller into it. After putting 8 or 9 coats of Le Tonks varnish on it this winter, I don't want it bouncing around the bottom of the boat when I'm trailering. It must have had a 3" inside diameter hole. As opposed to many pool noodles that are only maybe 1" ID...

But, no, what you really want to do is to get some old firehose for free.

They will want to work their way loose- if you are ok with drilling holes near the gunwale, then maybe long zip ties around the noodles will hold them in place well enough.

You can also slather sunscreen on the pool noodles. I've used it on bungee cords in the cockpit and they last way longer than without it.

Wow, seriously? Suntan lotion on bungee? I mean, sure I guess that would help some.

I think I might try getting some McNett UV Tech to spray on my pool noodles: http://www.mcnett.com/m-essentials/uv-tech#22795

I read about similar protectants for canvas. I should look into that. What was it, Boating magazine had an article on canvas care, and they recommended some UV spray on, and a separate water repellent spray... I should try to find that article, and pay attention this time.

Another trick I have seen used successfully is to just cut long strips of carpet wide enough to go over the gunwale and then contact cement the carpet to the edge of the boat. It protects your boat when it banks up against the freeboard when climbing on board. Much cheaper than fire hose, unless you can find it free (the fire hose, that is).

i like the carpet idea as the only used firehose i found is 50 miles away.
